The nameplates of Time and Cosmopolitan are both in the largest font size. Time has a more angular font while Cosmopolitan has a more rounded font. Both magazine covers have strong vertical eye movement.

Time has a fairly minimalistic look using only black, white and red. There are four different sizes of text and two fonts used. The main image is black and white; a smiling man with a maze in the shape of a brain on his forehead. A black background contrasts with the color of the font and the white in the man’s face. There is only one headline, placed directly under the nameplate. The white of the headline and the red of the nameplate both stand out very well against the black background.

Cosmopolitan has at least six different font sizes. Pink, yellow, white and black are the colors used. Hot pink is used to highlight important text. There are four headlines all with more text under them. The main image is of Mila Kunis in a bronze dress which goes with the yellow and pink color scheme. All of the fonts in Cosmopolitan are bolder than the fonts of Time magazine. The white and black fonts do not get lost in the image or background.

  1. Good point about the hierarchy! The nameplate is the largest and the headlines are next- important of headlines is based on size too.

  2. Strong vertical eye movement is about the only thing these two covers have in common. Unfortunately the "smiling man" is a mug shot of the psycho who opened fire in Arizona. Good thing Cosmo relaxes the eye with a nice shot of Mila Kunis!

  4. Cosmo is very cute and color coordinated where as Time is in your face and to the point with the main articles.

  5. Even though Time doesn't have as much going on in the cover, the picture they used makes it very intriguing.

  6. These two magazines are in two completely different aspects of reader's I would sat if I had to choose between the two I would probably choose the COSMO magazine because the cover is more eye attractive then the TIME magazine is.

  7. Good eye when pointing out the minimalistic qualities of the Time mag. Also you made good points the Cosmo mags use of color within its text, an how each worked and functioned to catch the viewers eye.

  11. Very cool analyzation with the colors. I think Time did a good job just using Black and White. When ever people want to make a point, they may say something like, "here it is, in black and white".
There is no other way around it, and I think that's how time wanted to get their point across.

  12. Time magazines nameplate is really big though they are established. While Cosmopolitans is hidden behind Mila's head, and they are established as well. The black of Cosmo really makes her eyes pop out a lot. While in TIME the red pops with the question mark.
