The two magazines I chose to compare/contrast are House Beautiful and Elle Décor magazine. These magazines are similar because they are about home interior design, and both magazines feature a room as the main picture. The color scheme on the magazines are similar because the House Beautiful magazine is mainly shades of blue but the main headline is a shade of brown, this is a good accent color for a headline because on the color wheel browns and oranges are opposite colors of blue to make the font stand out. The Elle Décor magazine is mainly a brown shade and the main headline is a shade of blue which make the headline stand out also. They both have headlines that stand out against the main photo to catch the reader’s attention. The nameplates of both magazines stand out and are great fonts to inform the reader’s of each brand. Both nameplates stretch across the top of the magazine’s and are a good size to not clutter the magazine but large enough to be read easily. Elle Décor is across the top in a unique way, the word Elle is vertical to fit the D in Décor. The placement of Décor has a good layout were it fits above the beam in the picture of the room. They both have about the same number of headlines were it is enough to interest the readers to the inside context but the headlines don’t clutter the main picture.
Even though these magazines are very similar, they have differences as well. By looking at the cover of the House Beautiful magazine a person can see it is a magazine to help the reader decorate their house. This is noticeable by the head lines such as “Makeovers-Problems Solved”,” Living Room Before and After (Do it in a Day!), and “Refresh your sofa (With Pillows!). The Elle Décor magazine focuses on showing rooms that have been interior designed, where the article would be about the room rather than how to make your house like that featured room. It seems to be more of a high-class magazine were the reader would find ideas to design a room rather than the House Beautiful that guides you on how to decorate. The head lines on Elle Décor would lead the reader to come to this conclusion from titles including “Winter Wonders, Warm and Welcoming Rooms”, “50 Delightful, Dazzling Gifts, “A High- Styled Ski House”. The Elle Décor magazine appears high end by the title, using the word Décor shows the reader it focuses on the scenic decoration of a room, the certain style of a room. The title House Beautiful illustrates a way to decorate or fix a room to have a more Décor look. Though both magazines have the focal picture as a room, the rooms differ in the way they designed. Elle Décor looks more elegant and professionally designed. The House Beautiful main picture of a room appears more ordinary. The pictures differ in another way to show the seasons they were printed in, the House Beautiful published in February looks chosen for the spring season, the bright blue and yellow colors and the headline using the word “Refresh” leads me to think the magazine focuses on the upcoming spring season. People usually clean in spring, such as spring cleaning and refreshing a house from winter. The Elle Décor published in the winter month of January features a very cozy and warm picture of a room; the brown and red colors used feel more like the winter season. The headline “Get Cozy” sums up the picture shown. Some headlines are white which accent the white table cloth and chairs making the words pop of the cover.
By the cover’s of these magazines, a person can see similarities by the color choices, both having a picture featuring a nicely decorated room and the similar headlines being about rooms that have a design element to them. Differences also stand out with these magazines by the details in the pictures shown, the season they resemble, and the headlines being similar by designing a room but differs how the magazine’s content show the reader how to do so. The Elle Décor magazine is an interior design magazine and the House Beautiful is more of how to decorate a room. The main similarly is they are both eye catching and well put together.
