For the magazine comparison I choose Bicycling and Area Auto Racing News. The Bicycling magazine cover is very active from the bright colors to the photo, everything jumps out at you. The photo used is a picture of professional bike racer George Hincapie. It shows him standing behind his bike with his arms crossed in a "what's next?" type of look with the clouds behind him. I think they choose this picture because the article involved discusses his upcoming cycling plans, and the picture gives it a "the sky's the limit" attitude to his plans. The New Year New You is in white, because white has a fresh look to it and signifies that it is a new start and anything is possible. The Motivation Issues? is in orange, because orange is a stimulating color that is energetic and makes you want to get up and do something. The other articles are in smaller text and alternate colors since they are not the feature articles.
The Area Auto Racing News on the other hand is almost the opposite of the Bicycling magazine cover. Traditionally the Area Auto publication( which is more of a weekly publication rather then a monthly magazine) would have a lot of bright colors and pictures and stories from area racetracks. This issue however is different from the others, because it is a Memorial Edition for a racer from New Jersey, John Blewett III, who was killed in a racing accident between him and his brother. Other then saying Special Memorial Edition the only other story is the headline on the bottom of the page. I think they choose to put a picture of him on the cover, rather then a picture of the race or the wreck, out of respect and to show that he was not just a racer, but also a person. The blue and white background, that looks like clouds and the sky, match his eyes and his racing suit. i think they choose this layout to show that he is up in heaven above everyone.
